Dale Harding
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
One of the many patients who are not forced to stay in the hospital, but chooses to. Harding is intelligent and has a college education, but chooses to stay due to his criticism for being a homosexual. He was looked up on by the acutes due to his intelligence, but his position as a leader is taken away when McMurphy enters. He is a normal person, but his homosexuality leads to him being heavily criticized by inconsiderate people. |
analysis
Although Harding was a spark in McMurphy's rebellion, the fact that he did not
tell the consequences that would happen if he continued to rebel against Nurse
Ratchet. This debateble selfish act led to the lobotomy of McMurphy, but also
to the freedom of the patients and the end of Nurse Ratched's absolute power.
We do not know why he did not tell McMurphy what would happen, but we can infer
that he wanted the an end to Nurse Ratcheds control, and that he would not
continue his rebellion if he knew the consequences. Harding leaving from the
hospital set a precedent for the other cured patients to leave from the
hospital.
