Chief bromden
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Chief Bromden is the narrator of the story. He likes to keep to himself and pretends to be deaf in order to avoid speaking to other people. He is half white and half indian. His father was Chief Tee Ah Millatoona, and his mother was Mary Louise Bromden. Although not the oldest in the hospital, he has been in there the longest. He is very tall, presumed to be 6 foot 7 inches. Although his large size can be intimidating, he has a strong belief in his mind that he is weak. He also has paranoia, but he is saved by McMurphy... |
analysisPretending to be dumb and deaf gave Chief Bromden a large amount of knowledge on how the hospital works. Although his childhood was scaring due to his mothers harsh control of his father, it may not be the leading cause for causing his mental problems. Bromden tells us about the electroshock treatments and how the hospital controlled its patients. Randle McMurphy ignited a spark in Bromden. He steped out of his comfort zone and spoke to McMurphy, showing him he was not just a dumb indian. When McMurphy ignored Bromdem's warnings and was lobotomized, he realizes how terrible and injust the hospital is, and breaks his mental barrier and escapes the prison. |
